In the journey through life, we often encounter unexpected challenges that test our strength and resilience. My own journey took a significant turn when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. It was over the course of my treatment that made me realize how little control I had over my own care plan and how I was gradually losing my autonomy. Advocating for myself became a necessity.
The Stress That Broke Me: The Link Between Health and Stress
I’ll preface with, profound impact of PTSD, secondary PTSD, and the chronic stress associated with military life extends beyond emotional challenges, often manifesting in physical health. Research suggests a link between prolonged exposure to stress and the development of autoimmune disorders. The constant state of heightened alertness and the toll on mental well-being can disrupt the delicate balance of the immune system, leading to the body mistakenly attacking its tissues. For those who have served and family members, this correlation highlights the importance of holistic care, addressing both the mental and physical aspects of health. Recognizing and mitigating the effects of stress through therapeutic interventions, such as Emotional Freedom Techniques, becomes essential in fostering overall well-being and preventing the potential onset of illnesses. It underscores the interconnected nature of mental and physical health, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support for individuals navigating the complexities of military-related stress.
If only I understood that before I become ill. Maybe I could have taken better care of myself during the deployments, fertility struggles, miscarriage, and the general stress life brings.
Empower Yourself: PTSD Healing
In hindsight, losing the pregnancy was extremely traumatic and painful. I was disgusted with myself. Yet, with deployments I never took time to process the experience, grief, or pain. Pushing through and on to the next thing was a way of life. There came a time, I needed something radically different. I needed something that supported me, that didn’t impose fear or victimization. I needed to heal the root cause of my illness.Β I refused to let my illness define who I was or dictate the course of my life. I firmly believed that it wasn’t the reason why I was put on this Earth.
I began working with a naturopath who introduced me to Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). This revolutionary approach opened up a new world of healing for me. Through EFT, I found a way to break free from the victimization that others seemed to want to impose upon me. It allowed me to reclaim my sense of self, manage my emotional well-being, and connect on new levels.
Honor Yourself: PTS(D) is Just a Part of You
EFT, in its essence, honors every aspect of who we are, without forcing us to conform to society’s expectations or the limitations imposed by our conditions. It’s a reminder that our lives are our own, and our bodies and souls belong solely to us.
Whether you’re battling traumatic brain injury, PTSD, an autoimmune disorder, or any other label that society might attach to you, remember this: it is not who you are. It’s merely a part of you, something you must manage and plan for, but it should never define your identity.
